So, Lady Em here. I spend the majority of my insomiatic evenings reading on Kindle Unlimited. One of my recent finds that made me chortle into my pillow (sorry, Mr. Lady Em) was Hot and Badgered by Shelley Laurenston. I totally picked it up because the title was a fantastically bad pun and made me laugh. The book just got better than there. It was full of bad-ass sisterhood, violent hijinks and a romantic subplot with a surprisingly polite bear shifter. This is the first story in a series about sisters who share a badger shifter father who, aside from his initial deposit of DNA is worthless and detrimental to the well being of the family. The main character is Charlie, a non shifting Badger-wolf hybrid that keeps her violent (middle) and neurotic (youngest) sisters in line. The sisters have to work together to unravel a horrendous mess their father got them into by being the felonious moron he has been their entire lives. Enter Berg, the grizzly shifter who ends up falling for Charlie. He is so perfect for her, understands strong sibling bonds and has patience with her reticence, you are rooting for him the whole time.
There are moments of mayhem (the men usually know to stay out of it when the female badgers are brawling) that just adds to the many humorous moments of the book. There are a few times where mostly innocent bystanders are hurt, but these are used to show how out of control that particular person is, and why their family reacts the way they do.
I really appreciated how the author had researched badgers and their social structures (or lack thereof) and integrated that into the story, as well as the other animals that side characters shift into. Not only was the book hilarious, its execution showed a lot of well thought out intention.
I found this book deserving of 5 out of 5 quills. If you are interested in checking out the book on Amazon, follow the link below.
